*THE HEADLINES*

BELOW IS A NOTICED FROM THE VERMONT DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH REGARDING DRINKING WATER IN OUR AREA. THE CONCERN IS CENTERED AROUND WELLS ON THE NORTH SIDE OF VANCE HILL, HOWEVER ALL PRIVATE WELLS SHOULD BE TESTED REGULARILY. OUR MUNICIPAL WATER SYSTEM IS TESTED REGULARILY AND THE WATER IS SAFE TO DRINK! YOU CAN REACH OUT TO THE TOWN CLERKS OFFICE FOR MORE INFORMATION.

If you use a private well for your drinking water, now is a good time to test. Recent sampling from private wells in Newport Center showed high levels of uranium and gross alpha radiation above safe levels in several private wells. About 1 in 3 wells tested in Newport Center had elevated levels of gross alpha radiation, with some wells measuring far above safe limits.

Long-term exposure to elevated uranium and radiation in drinking water may increase the risk of kidney disease and certain cancers.

You can’t see, smell or taste these contaminants, so testing is the only way to make sure your water is safe. The water quality of your well can be different from your neighbor’s well.

What you can do:

  • Test your well water to make sure it is within drinking water standards
  • Follow up on any elevated results with appropriate treatment

Learn more about testing and how to get started at:
www.HealthVermont.gov/Water/Testing or call 802-338-4724 to order the Homeowner Testing Package, which includes test kits for gross alpha radiation and other harmful contaminants.

If testing poses a significant financial barrier, please reach out to the Newport District Health office at 802-334-6707 to see if testing assistance is available.

To find out if you may be eligible for financial assistance to remediate your well, please visit https://www.healthvermont.gov/environment/healthy-homes/financial-assistance
